  • Predictions for the Future of Mobile/Wireless Computing – predictions made in Dec 2002 @ Computer World
  • Paul Jacob’s (CEO of Qualcomm) prediction about the future features in cell phones: (written in Oct 2006, source: CNN)
    • Live TV Channels: Access to multiple live TV broadcasts on their phones, eventually enabling communities to experience news and entertainment on mobiles.
    • Personal Identification: Sensors will read biometric data - a thumbprint, say - to grant access to files stored in networks.
    • Health Support: Tiny sensors will be able to monitor heart rate, which your cellphone can then automatically send wirelessly to your doctor.
    • Tagging: Wireless phones could become the ultimate social networking tool, using global-positioning technology and mapping databases to let you "tag" a favorite spot so that if your friends walk or drive by, their phones alert them that they're passing a favourite spot!
    • Media Center: Utilising the camera facilities in your phone and marrying it with Wi Fi, you could snap pictures and shoot videos and simultaneously transmit it for your family members to see on their TV! In essence, each individual could become a mini media company
  • Miniaturisation
  • WIMAX to set the pace for wireless revolution? – The technology would reduce the cost of taking broadband to new places and could have an access range of up to 48 kilometers.
  • In India, there are serious plans to provide telecommunications to villages using wireless methods. The percentage penetration of telephony to Indian villages is still very low, and hence the new wireless technologies could leapfrog the legacy telephone communications technologies.

  • Augmented Reality-based User Interface for Mobile Applications & Services - Traditional design of user interfaces for mobile phones is limited to a small interaction that provides only the necessary means to place phone calls or to write short messages. This research looks into how to improve the user interface of future mobile devices by using a more human-centred design. One possible solution is to combine the Augmented Reality technique with image recognition in such a way that it will allow the user to access a "virtualized interface". • A Mobile User Interface for Threading, Marking, and Previewing Email - Collaborative User Experience Group, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center - Email has become a vital center for managing work, and has a growing role on mobile devices. However, the challenge of creating user interfaces to support the complex ways people manage their email are exacerbated by the limitations of mobile devices. This research paper addresses this challenge by enhancing a PDA’s inbox with user interface tools for viewing and navigating threaded email discussions, marking messages with gestural pop-up menus, and previewing content with one-line “ticker-tape” displays. Tidbits

  1. According to NTT DoCoMo, Inc. President Masao Nakamura, mobile phones have passed through eras in which they served as communications infrastructure (in the form of voice and e-mail) and as IT infrastructure (offering the added value of information services) and have now entered a third stage in which ways are being found to make them useful in people's daily lives. Nakamura posits that the biggest idea for the future of mobile phones revolves around moving images. If full-fledged terrestrial digital broadcasting begins, he says, mobile phones will gain the ability to receive television signals.
  2. Watch phones
  3. Other research areas: Mobile screen user interfaces, authentication using mobile phones, mobile & cell phone security, short voice message service, mobile payments
  4. Cell Phone Users Have Mixed Feelings on Future Features - Cell phone users have mixed feelings about predicted new handset features, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com), in a April 2005 report. According to the survey by the firm, Wi-Fi- and Skype-enabled handsets, voice activation for text input, and mapping and traffic routing features resonate well. However, few respondents expressed interest in wireless phones that could be used as a wallet for purchases, or for watching TV programs:
    1. 42% of the respondents were very or extremely interested in voice activation for their wireless phones.
    2. More than 4 in 10 were very or extremely interested in buying a wireless phone with built-in Wi-Fi for voice and data.
    3. Just 12% had an interest in buying a wireless phone capable of receiving TV broadcasts.
