Dot Mobi
DotMobi is the newest TLD on the block. It is expected to
make a significant difference to mobile users’ experience of the Internet.
The sites having .mobi as the extension need to have their
home page in XHTML, in order to signify that they are mobile ready.
dotMobi is currently in its sunrise registration period,
where trademark holders can register their domains. It will be open to public
starting Sept 22, 2006
Mobinomy.com is the first .com directory for .mobi
sites online. While .mobi sites will be used primarily through the
mobile, there will exist a need for users to check out relevant .mobi sites
on the web. Mobinomy.com attempts to cater to this need.
Mobinomy.com plans to have the most comprehensive listing
of .mobi sites online. This list will be useful for those looking for content
compatible for browsing on their mobile phones.

Registration for dotMobi domains has started for the
general public – that is, you and me. It is currently in the First Landrush
Period where domain names will still carry a premium price. Landrush 2 Period
begins Oct 10, from when on anyone can register any available, non-trademark
protected dot mobi names for normal prices.

1. .mobi is a top-level domain approved by ICANN as a
sponsored TLD. It will be restricted to mobile devices and sites providing
services for them. It is sponsored by a consortium of companies which
includes Three, Ericsson, GSM Association, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Syniverse,
T-mobile, Telefonica, TIM and Vodafone.
2. The .mobi top level domain
will make it easier to access Internet services using mobile devices.

Newsweek, 10 July 2006 - Because the typical Web page doesn't
fit legibly on a tiny cell-phone screen, people wanting access to the
mobile Net have to go through so-called walled garden servers like
Vodafone Live and iMode. Now some high-tech firms are trying to promote
a standardized domain name for mobile devices—similar to dot-com for Web
sites—that would give users a reliable way of receiving and displaying
data on their mobile devices. In June, Microsoft, Google, Nokia,
Vodafone and other firms announced dot-mobi that is supposed to create a
standardized, recognizable way for companies to launch mobile-friendly
sites to mirror their existing sites. The venture could remove a big
impediment to making mobile Internet a widespread—and perhaps even a
preferred—mode of Web browsing, says Newsweek.
